Dear Cory

Found by Emily in Ocala, Florida

I found this letter at a thrift store. It’s written on the inside cover of Here’s Another Book, My Friend. Makes me wonder if Cory lost the book or just gave it away. Anywho I rescued it and it is an inspirational letter for me; thank you, Ann and Cory.

Wow! Sounds like stuff that people wrote in my high school yearbook; and that I probably wrote in their yearbooks. Lots and lots of references to things that make no sense at all to me now, inside jokes and whatnot.

I’m not so sure Cory ever read to the end of this long note. I’m pretty sure he never read the book Ann gave him. (But I’d bet he kept it around for years and years until in one last move he had to lighten his load and it got sent to the thrift store. Or maybe Cory’s dead and some friend or relative dumped all his books at the store, not knowing that the givers – like Ann – were really special to Cory.)

The fact that it’s a book of Rod McKuen poems says LOTS, let me tell you! LOTS!!

I bet you’re right, Librarian, and Cory never read the book. Golly, could Ann give Cory a little more advice, there? They were on the swim team together, but she sounds pretty prissy and mumsy. “Remember this…remember that…do what I say…promise?” I bet she ran for Student Council President and fancies herself the arbiter of taste and good student behaviour! Too many reruns of Saved by the Bell, I’m thinking.
