Freonz and co: Yes, there are Euro signs on the new keyboards, but some of them don't work unless you configure them to do so. A lot of us just use the capital E. We all know what it means in context.…  more»

"They're yours!...But don't lend them out."

Ok, so that means they're not really yours, they're still mine, if I think I can call dibs on what you do with whatever they are.…  more»

Like so many young moms I know, this poor woman is suffering from severe "shoulds." Someone told her, and she beleived, that having a baby "shouldn't" change your life all that much, that you "should" be able to carry on as normal. Yeah.…  more»

If you steal a tip on politeness (from wherever), does that make the stealing extra rude?

Reminds me of a guy who brought a shipment of Bibles into our city for free distribution at a booktable in the local street market. He parked the van near the street market and had the entire shipment stolen.…  more»

@ What the Freak...I find that the more a person says "not that there's anything wrong with (whatever)" the more likely it is they think there actually *is* something wrong with it. It's like getting reprimanded at work and having your boss say repeatedly, "It's nothing personal".…  more»

Is this note written by Drunk Tina of a previous Find? I hope so, at least she got a ride home.  more»

A nook is a corner, often created where there really isn't one...an alcove (see "breakfast nook"). It comes from "inglenook", the space next to those massive Olde Englishhe fireplaces in which you could roast a whole ox...there…  more»

This comes close to my own philosophy of life: "Live as if it were true." As if your beliefs really are important; as if your actions really can make a difference; as if you are a person of value...it covers a lot of bases.…  more»

Freonz, thanks for the link. Old photos are almost as much fun as old letters/diaries. (What are historians of tomorrow going to learn from--old computer chips?)…  more»

Melanie, I see it now. I was interpreting the "peak" of the cap as a bow. Seeing as how mobcaps went out in about 1890, all is now revealed...  more»

Given that camels/dromedaries are notoriously fractious and ill-tempered, I am always amazed that zoos offer camel rides to anyone, particularly children. I've also been told they smell quite a bit. Fun times.  more»

I'm intrigued by the headgear...Mennonite Mom in a prayer cap? 1920's cloche hat?…  more»

How very un-womble of me, but the first thing that popped into my head was a line from Lou Reed's "Rock and Roll Animal"--"Gimme an issue, and I'll give you a tissue. You can..."
And anyone who has been subjected to LR can complete the sentence.…  more»

The tiny waist and rigid carriage are both caused by wearing corsets and stays, which in those days were made of steel and whalebone covered in cloth. My grandmother wore such things when she came over to the US from Copenhagen with her 4 sisters. There was a thing called a "foundation garment" that went from the breastbone to below the waist, compressing everything in its path.…  more»

Dad,

Why do you think I chose that school in the first place? Yeah, I know, the school you like would probably give me a better education, but that one's only 15 min away and I'd probably end up living at home.
I'd rather make my own choices than go on living in your shadow.…  more»

Ah, fellow Foundhounds, what an odyssey this find started! I was instantly, for some reason, reminded of an extremely surreal TV play I had seen in the 60's. I saw it twice, I remember, but understood nothing at that age, except that it was a jewel of absurdity, in the literary sense.…  more»

Lèse-majesté....a lovely French word that, after the Revolution, translates best as "get a life, Kingy!"
