21 Hearts
FOUND by Mike Mccaffrey
I found this piece of art atop a snow bank during a walk two days after Valentine's Day in 2004. I'm guessing that the young artist is a girl. I'm guessing she created it for her parents during art class at school.
The inclusion of an alphabet and numbers reflect the long sheets of letters and numbers that adorn the walls of every elementary classroom. The first line of hearts begins with two excited hearts. The rest in the line are colored between the lines. The last line of hearts seems hurried and electrified. The twenty-one hearts suggest a tale of passion; a short burst of excitement followed by an attempt at control and finally the surrender to love. This child must adore her mom and dad.

that is perhaps the most beautiful description i have ever read.
Beautiful, but unneccessary. It's a picture for someone she loved. Don't analyze love.
not unnecessary. that was remarkable. that description.
Maybe the kid just wanted it to look that way. It's an elementary school art project for crying out loud.
Maybe the kid DID just want it to look that way, or maybe she drew it like that without realising. Maybe she meant it all along. Kids are remarkable, and that description is beautiful.
I say it is just a drawing that she rushed on the last line...no need to over analyze.
I don't think it looks rushed at the end. Perhaps she meant them to be heart-flowers at the end? Or made a mistake and wanted it to look intentional and pretty? I know I did that all the time when I was little.
I think a boy made it.
It is adorable and no matter how the chil dintended it to look, the descrpition is lovely. I adore how you put a story to it. Thanks for sharing it, hun. Very adorable find!
I loved the description. My son (7) does drawings like that, though he usually colors the hearts blue or green.
Just reading "The Vagina Monologues" with a forword by Gloria Steinham. She mentions how the heart shape actually looks more like a woman's parts than the actual heart organ, and how she believes this has been handed down from ancient drawings. That adds a whole other bent to this drawing I think. I'll never look at a heart shape in the same way again.
I used to draw Valentine hearts that way, like the last line has been done. I did it to show lace trim. I remember seeing alot of valentines where it was a red heart shape with lace trim, and I always tried to imitate it. The earlier ones might just be perfecting the technique. Multiple styles might just be finding which way looks best.
I find the letters and numbers the most curious. If it was across the top of the room, there's no reason to have them out of order and missing any, so why those letters and numbers in particular?
Kind of sad that this was found on top of a snow bank and not proudly displayed on someone's fridge.
my girlfriend recreated a drawing of this and wrote "The twenty-one hearts suggest a tale of passion; a short burst of excitement followed by an attempt at control and finally the surrender to love." on it. i love it. she stuck it in a postsecret book she gave me.
what a shame that the recipient will never get this. i would frame it and display it proudly.
You Know What??? I THINK THE DRAWING IS BEAUTIFUL AND IT'S OBVIOUS THAT THE HEARTS ARE HEART FLOWERS! DEFINITELY OVER RATIONALIZED BY THE POSTER OF THIS DRAWING THOUGH!!! FOR GOD'S SAKE, OVER ANALYZING THIS DRAWING TAKES AWAY FROM THE INNOCENCE OF THIS ARTISTS WORK. ALL THIS ARTIST COULD HAVE FELT WHILE DRAWING THIS BEAUTIFUL MESSAGE WAS SOMETHING A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW HOWW TO FEEL ANYMORE!!! REAL, PURE, AND INNOCENT LOVE!!! AND THOSE HEARTS LOOK MORE... SHALL I SAY HAPPY, THEN RUSHED!!!
Bubbakush, I hope that at some point you found that caps lock key again.
