To the White Couple
FOUND by Emily Long in Chicago, Illinois
This note was taped to a light pole. I didn't remove the note because it had obviously been placed there for a reason and it needed to remain there. If only we knew what sort of interaction happened between this guy and the white couple to elicit such a raw, pained, angry, response...

Did the white couple get their mace out or something?

Wishing I could smoke in my office
From my experience, the couple probably crossed to the other side of the street, and the girl tried to hide her purse/jewelry inside her coat, or something else equally close-minded & stupid.

It should say, "Not all black men are criminals." Last time I checked, every race and ethnicity included criminals. Being overly sensitive to another's race cuts both ways.

"To the Asian couple last night: Latino men are NOT criminals."

Yes, but he gets their point across. Let's not worry a/b being 100% politically correct here. If we were, shouldn't he have said "African Americans" instead of "black men," and "caucasion" instead of "white?"

A lad in a box
The sentiment is all very well: of course most people everywhere aren't criminals, and shouldn't be treated as prospective attackers. But the chances of something happening to you goes up very sharply when you are on the streets of a city, it is late at night, and you are in a small group (i.e. couple). In that situation, taking any precautions against the still probably small possibility of meeting someone who will give you trouble is just sensible. But we don't know the exact circumstances of course.

very well said, Midlife Crisis
Now all the criminals
in their coats and their ties
are free to drink martinis
and watch the sun rise.
