We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...
This got to be a girl's drawing - boys just don't draw as "cute" like this (the whale, for example).
Strange how the "rather large flaming meteor" somehow disturbs the otherwise rather idyllic scenery.
But it is a nice piece of art none the less.
cool picture. reminds me of the children's book "the littlest prince".
of course the little prince only had like one flower on his tiny world(if I remember right), this tiny worlds got a LOT more going on.
I wonder if the storm clouds over the person, and the flaming meteor hint at a more depressed state of mind then the rest of the otherwise rather cheerful picture would imply...
Can anyone make out the words next to the meteor?
The rather large flaming meteor represents the element fire. You can see Smiling Whale inhabiting water, and the blowing wind. The fourth element, dirt, is getting rained on.
Finally, getting all Zen and stuff, you can see the fifth element (void) off to the left.
This completes your tour of the universe.
This drawing is simply fantastic. I especially love the tree.
I'd buy a shirt with this drawing across the chest...minus the stars. They're just too generic [/art critic]
Flaming meteor, whale, man, panda in a bamboo forest...smokey city, farm with tiny animals...the artist's "creative shorthand" is amazingly detailed. Does anyone else see the "Tumbleweeds" dead-cow-skeleton just to the right of the city, at the top? This could be a response to a class on global warming/climate change.
I would posit that the artist's family/parents take the environment very seriously, that they have grown up with these issues, and this piece of art is a doodle-type response to the class. Maybe the teacher had to give the unit and thought it was bollocks (some people do). The fact that it is done on plain notebook paper makes me think it was not an in-class project to be turned in, but rather in-class doodle drawing of the type I used to do myself in classes like Biology, Social Studies, or Intro to Anthropology. (Yes, I did it even in college.)
It's very well drawn and the conceptualisation is amazing.
Le Petit Prince!
When I took high school French a million years ago, we read "Le Petit Prince" and one of our assignments was to make up our own planet, complete with illustration.
Les profs de francais pensent semblablement?
@Monkey: One reason I should read the comments first: sometimes people beat me to it.
Also, it says, "rather large flaming meteor" next to the rather large flaming meteor.
I'm seeing a telly-tubby and an antipodean penis. I'm not sure whether it is the artist or me that is disturbed.
I've got a tattoo on my hip that looks just like this. Weird.
Why would you label the tractor but not the hay bale or the bamboo?
"Rather Large Flaming Meteor" would be a good name for a rock band.
I see this as the circle of civilization on Earth, where everything starts and ends with a rather large flaming meteor.
It just occured to me: somehow the matchstick man looks a bit strange alongside the otherwise rather detailed parts of the drawing (the tree, for example). It's just a bit too oversimplified in comparison.
I always thought that empty space was ruled between two marginal holes.
I like the tree a lot, too, Brichs. :)
@ Man Behind The Curtain:
"Antipodean Penis" is SO totally a band name.
Clearly, we are both disturbed.
It is a beautiful find, though. I love the "empty space" label.
@the man behind the curtain in oz: I saw the penis, too.
Love this find. The only drama that can be inferred is that meteor heading toward earth, but at least it is happy.
Empty space over the city. Appropriate, it seems.
I like the way the sailboat doesn't fall off the earth. Same with the dolphin
I think this person is japanese, based purely on the ignorant observation that they felt out of the all the habitats in the world, a bamboo forest complete with panda was worth focussing on. I would have draw a jungle, or forest filled with bears, wolves, deer etc.
I like the way the upside-down tractor on the bottom is labeled. Like someone might mistake it for a dune buggy or something.
That tree has eyes..
Look at that! The Panda's in a bamboo forest!
One small critique: the artist spent a lot of time shading the globe, but it doesn't correspond to the location of the sun.
@not just another mouth.. Oui, tu as raison. Je suis d'accord. Mais, l'étudiant doit nommer les choses en français!
sweeeet!
I think it's beautiful. Wow, some of you have really good vision, or glasses, or your magnify works on this one. That silo does look like a penis.
I wish I had time to draw that many stars.
"And I said to myself
What a wonderful world"
I think they drew a stick man because the human figure is notoriously difficult to draw. And the panda, because it's been a symbol of endangered species since the 60s. BTW the panda is from China, not Japan.
star in the purple sky saw what I did: that tree has eyes (rather eerie eyes, at that).
I like the drawing, but I wish there were something on the "face" of the planet, as well. Anything.
Although, wait. As I stare at it and soften my focus, I see that a 3-D image of Yoda appears to be floating above the surface. Cool.
When I squint at the surface I see a bird foetus. What a potent life symbol.
The little prince didn't only have the flower, he also had three volcanoes, two active and one dormant (though one never knows). He also, of course, has the constant battle with the baobab trees.
That tree REALLY does have eyes!!! And I'm gonna' get a tatoo of that tree!
Love it!!!
And the city looks as though it might be New York...the TWIN TOWERS. Maybe that's why it says empty space?
HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all the Canadaian FOUND-HOUNDS!
Looks to me like the world is pretty fucked.
I can't tell...Is that boat the Nina, the Pinta, or the Santa Maria?
The Santa Maria sank off the coast of Haiti in 1492.
I have a t-shirt with something similar to this on it. It has the carbon symbol in the middle cuz we're all made of carbon.
I have a guy friend that draws stuff like this and puts them up all over his walls. Doodling is always better than homework!
Where is this penis...? Is it the silo?
Well that narrows it down, Dolphin. I figured it had to be one of the three, given what day it was posted on.
Is it just me or is this drawn horribly out of scale?
Well I was just guessing it is the Santa Maria. It was the flagship after all.
it's so weird to see a sample of someone else's handwriting that matches one's own exactly.
I wish I had the kind of patience as a kid that it takes to draw stuff like this.
Save the Rain Forests
Save the Pandas
Save the Whales
Save the Farms
Save the Cities from Meteors
If they had gone with a bigger circle and less stars they may have had room for some baby seals and no nuke stuff.....
Is that a Georgia O'Keefe dead cow in the arid wasteland past the city on the way back to the all seeing eye rain forest tree??
Would it possible for us to be able to magnify this one??
A great drawing!!
Maybe the empty space above the city has no stars because they are hard to see at night? You know, cities have way too many lights to be able to see the stars...
The only part of this drawing I could reproduce is the stick figure. Maybe, (and I'm just thinking out loud here) the reason the illustrator of this Find decided to draw a stick figure for the sole, lonely human being in the picture, is to show the relative lack of importance of people in the World. In other words people are so unimportant in the scheme of things on this planet that she decided not to bother with the details she put into the rest of the picture.
This is lovely.
The whale is smiling only because he is oblivious to the rather large flaming meteor about to destroy his environment.
At any rate, this is a great drawing. I hope the student pursues art in college.
the sun appears to have an eye, too.
This a really nice doodle. With some careful thought and a good deal of tweaking this concept could be some good art. It inspires me to do some drawing with my kids tonight.
I hope the stick figure can avoid the lightening bolt.
Looks like a Raffi song, but all I can think of is:
Starry, starry night....
i love it!! so cute as well. little panda aaaahhhhwwwww. its kind of reminding me of the Flaming Lips. fuck knows why.
This find is *precioussss*!! And the comments are darn good too!
However (OxyMoron, yanno?) "empty space" ain't so empty when it's got writing in it!!
Me too!! I want a T-shirt (or a poster for my wall?)
... now that I see the dead cow (thanks Hiplainsdrift)... doesn't it seem like the "odor marks"(?) get stronger after wafting over the dead cow skull towards the eyes-have-it-rainforest tree.
