"Sucks to your ass-partame!"
good to know ;)
jk
And red bull gives you wings. Now how to decide which is best?
Aspartame also causes migraines in those who are prone to them. To me, it tastes bitter, not sweet at all.
Red Bull also gives you heart failure if consumed to excess, Effie. Your call.
hmm, baby basil, now you've really spiced up the debate, I was leaning towards aspartime, but now I'm not so sure, heart failure sounds interesting.
Aspartame might give you a tumor.
It's not just an urban rumor.
But if you like it sweet,
it just can't be beat;
so go ahead, pile it on. Do more.
*Everything* causes tumors if you get enough of it.
@Farmer - LOL. Your rhyming has timing.
"You want as-part-a-me?? Step outside buddy. We can settle it out there."
Anyway, shouldn't this be on the "Borrowed" website if it was borrowed from a bulletin board?
Aspartame also is known to cause depression in those prone to it.
When aspartame first came out as an alternative to saccharine I jokingly said that after everyone became addicted to it the nebulous scientific They would find out aspartame causes AIDS. OK, so it wasn't AIDS, but it's not good for you.
Sucralose (Splenda) is my sweetner of choice. Yum, yum, can't beat sugar and chlorine.
IT'S NOT A TUMOR!
Ahhh. Renee knows us all too well. Sweet.
*rolls up sleeves* waiting on librarian.. Yeah, I want as-part-a-u! That was funny what you said!!
*buys boxes of aspartame*
Well I guess no one at the drugstore willever find out..
The amount of aspartame they were giving the rats in that study were gigantic, enormous amounts in a relatively short time span. So although the aspartame did give hte rats tumors, a human, in his/her lifetime, couldn't consume the amount of aspartame necessary to cause a tumor.
So, even though someone might drink 12 cans of diet soda pop and/or 15 cups of coffee loaded with aspartame each day for the rest of his/her life, he or she wouldn't get a tumor from it.
I've asked two different doctors about this, and they both told me the same thing.
This has been a public service announcement brought to you by C&H Pure Cane Sugar (That's the One.)
Actually, I knew three different young (20-something at the time) females who ALL consumed copious amounts of nutrasweet-laden products and were on The Pill.
No two of them lived in the same area of the US. Between 1990-1992, they all developed (opearable, benign) tumors in their brains. The only obviously apparent similarities were young, nutrasweet "addicted" and on The Pill.
Scary shit.
But truthfully, not as scary as the new one: chlorinated sugar. "It tasets like sugar cuz it's MADE from sugar.." Ummm yeah. Okay.
Aspartame in coffee is pointless since it breaks down under heat. That's why you can't bake or cook with it.
How much aspartame? 80 gallons a day?
Gimme a case of Aspartame and a carton of cigarettes! Tumor Party!!!!!!!!
its not a tumah....
i can't believe i'm the first one to say that.
I have read that it can also cause MS type symptoms in some people, mostly women. I think I would rather just risk getting fat. Ok....no I wouldn't....but I still won't touch it.
Mona dear - please look up 8 comments from yours.
It's OK that you ignore me - I've learned to deal with it (somehow) (sniff)
Besides, I thought you took aspartame when you got a headache.
It can cause seizures too. Fuck that shit. Even for those people who have been effectively convinced that their lives are not complete unless there's a cup of Dunkin' Donuts "coffee" in their hands at all times, it's better to stick with plain ol' sugar.
Oh Alan. I apologize. I should have known that someone as popculturally aware as you would have gotten that one first. When i saw it on my second readthrough the comments, i was hoping that i was only one or two below yours, so i could blame it on posting too slowly. But alas, i can only blame it on my lack of awareness. Again, my apologies, dear alan of the ptinging.
a psychic told a friend of mine that her dead aunt said not to drink diet pop anymore.
hey, girl in a cube. that's interesting research you found. where did you read it and may i have a copy?
the thing is, when you say "a human, in his/her lifetime, couldn't consume the amount of aspartame necessary to cause a tumor.", i think you grossly underestimate the amount of trash people are ready and willing to consume.
and i'm sure those same 2 doctors who told you not to worry will be more than happy to take you on as a patient when the tumors kick in..
Mona - I couldn't stay mad even if I tried.
All is right with the world once again. The birds sing, the frogs croak and various other objects are once again ptinging happily.
I have to ask though - did your friend's aunt die from a tumor?
It's not a tumor, it's my twin.
My Mom has given my son stuff with Equal in it and I always feel very uncomfortable about it. We(adults)only drink "full sugar" pop from time to time and I hardly ever give it to my son--but when I do, it's full sugar, all the way, baby!
**MODERATION** is the key/answer
to any/everything!!
However, I've spoke to several Doctors' and Nutritionists. Also, done some online research myself, only because I use to use Sweet 'n Low in my tea & coffee.
When I was on a luncheon date with my Mother, she said something along the lines of, " Holly, don't you know, or haven't you heard that ALL of the sugar subtitutes cause cancer of some kind..?"
I was like, frightened, overwhelmed, in awe, in a bad mood (like mom, why didn't you tell me this before?)felt like punching a wall, and then, I just decided to have a smoke! (Everything can and will 'cause Cancer, even if you're trying your best being **moderate** about it)
No, really, not to be funny, but, the research that they've done on 'Sucrelose' and ''Aspartame', so far, over a long period of time, can and will cause cancer, tumors, lumps, etc...
It's an accumalative process, just like Vitamins, smoking, drugs, over/under-eating, etc...
MODERATION, people!
I'm not a Doctor, and I'm not pretending to be, but, I do read alot, which broadens my information, as well, as my vocabulary, too!!
I believe NONE of what I hear, and only half of what I see, but most of what I read...as long as the source is a reliable and REAL one.
LIBRARIAN knows what I'm talking about...I hope! READ..READ..READ..READ!!!
Love the stuff. I sprinkle it on everything, including my popcorn.
Yummmmmm. also eat anything with sodium nitrate, in very large quantities.
Oh, and pass that MSG, please.
(anyone for yellow M & M's?)
My physician indicated to me that sprinkling aspartame and Splenda on ants kills them! So, my home is ant free but I'm still looking for an alternative to sugar!
Giving unsolicited advice makes your pee smell funny!
sniff sniff.. Matt, your cubicle smells funny. (duckin' and runnin')
My apologizes...if directed at me...I wasn't offering any unsolicited advice...just merely some beneficial info' that I had learned and saw for myself.
SORRY!!
Tumors or not the stuff is a neuro-toxin (sp?). And frankly if I'm going to kill brain cells I'd rather do it with a fifth of vodka.
LOL! I heard it that it would eat holes in your brain. Although I doubt it and I don't know about tumors either hmmmm, I have heard its not good for you though, and not to drink tons to diet drinks for that reason.
What are the diabetics to do?
I've heard the rumours about the tumours,
the heap o' talk about the hepatomas,
the dish about the cysts,
and the answers to the cancers,
All I have to say is that Snopes has this to say about the urban myth:
http://tinyurl.com/dhbnn
Ummmm wrong URL Indy.
*Plays Indy's theme song* Dum da da da daaaa da da Dum da da daaaaa da da da da da Dum da da da daaaa da da da da da da da da da da da da da daaaaaa da da da Dum da da daaaaa
Everything causes tumors or cancers these days pfffft When will this madness come to an end????? :O
lol jk but there is an article I found on this a while back :)
http://www.wnho.net/new_aspartame_studies.htm
Correct URL http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/aspartame.asp
Toumor??! I thought I was growing a twin!!
Seriously! I understand DONALD RUMSFELD was key to getting it approved for the market. That man has his heart set on getting us all killed!!! He is the devil!!
Just type in "Rumsfeld and aspartame" in your search engine of choice to get tons of articles on this.
Splenda is not a good alternative either, and there are virtually no studies on how all these different artificial sweeteners interact with each other long term. Sugar is better or if you must have a low calorie sweetener, use STEVIA, it's plant based and all natural, available in natural foods stores and FRED MEYERS in powdered or liquid concentrated form. Aspartame and Splenda are banned in many other countries. It drives me crazy how Splenda is marketed to parents to give their kids instead of sugar.
My sister in law is diabetic, she says Splenda makes her face numb, my daughter also says the same. Nutrasweet gives me a headache. I'll just stick to sugar. I try to mostly eat things my body recognizes.
As for what doctors tell you...have you ever seen that show "Mystery Diagnosis"? Scary stuff, and it seems the majority of those people on that show end up doing their own research and diagnosing themselves before doctors even do anything. No worries though, I bet Nutrasweet is a-ok, I mean the FDA wouldn't let them sell it if it were bad for you...would they?
Oh, and if seems "unsolicited advice" it's only because a lot of people are unaware there is another alternative for low calorie sweetener that isn't artificial and bad for you. You can even buy pop now sweetened with Stevia.
@ keeka in banana ... Here's a source for that research ["Over 20 years have elapsed since aspartame was approved by regulatory agencies as a sweetener and flavor enhancer. The safety of aspartame and its metabolic constituents was established through extensive toxicology studies in laboratory animals, using much greater doses than people could possibly consume."]
Butchko, Harriett H. et al., "Aspartame: review of safety." in "Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology" 2002 Apr;35(2 Pt 2):S1-93. also available online at:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12180494
[okay, so it the review article was produced by scientists working at the NutraSweet Company ... so shoot me! (You want "as-part-a-me"??).]
OK.
Am I the only one here who sweetens their coffee with antifreeze?
I thought by now someone would mention this alternative to aspartame.
Are we forgetting the other alternatives: unsweetened tea, unsweetened coffee, un-tampered-with fruit juice, and plain water.
No added sugar, and no artificial sweeteners!
Less filling AND they taste great.
@MOLLY- I see alot of soda with 'Stevia', too. If I were a diabetic, I'd opt for real sugar, just moderate it, alot! Or, if real sugar isn't an option, go for Stevia.
I now only use Honey, Brown Sugar and White Sugar.
In recipes, in regular cooking, drinks.
I try to limit myself to only 2 cans of soda- pop in a week, the rest of the time, lots of water, anywhere, anytime, anyamount!!!
Thank you, Librarian. I was beginning to think that I was the only one who doesn't see the need to constantly ingest sticky-sweet junk.
It shouldn't really be that hard:
1) Avoid sweets as a general rule.
2) Use sugar when you need a sweetener.
3) Moderation is a good thing.
Now, back to my delicious, unsweetened black coffee!
(BTW: Powdered FRED MEYERS doesn't sound like a good alternative to sugar.)
You're not alone. My basic beverage choices are water followed by plain-ass tea followed by beer. I am probably very alone in my hatred of fruit and that I never salt or pepper anything. Call me a weirdo, I don't care.
Dear Sweet (naturally, not artificially) Alan... will you marry me?
A few years back Raquel Welch was a spokesperson for one of the fake sugar (nutrasweet, I'm pretty sure.) alternatives, and she said, "I put it on ALL the fruit that I eat..."
WHY??? Fruit is magically delicious, just the way nature made it.
Turbo. You're a weirdo.
Alan. I don't know what my friend's aunt died of. I'll get back to you on that. Seems like an obvious question. Maybe i'll just ask my friend's aunt. Anyone got a ouija board I could borrow?
Unsolicited advice is the only kind i take. Whenever i solicit advice, i usually already have the answer i want in my head, i'm just looking for someone to concur with me. And if they don't, well, they're wrong.
I'm aspartame free. I used to get headaches all the time, when i was consuming 1 or 2 diet pop a day. Quit the pop, the headaches went away.
you people are so ignorant. read snopes.com
aspartame has never been linked in any scientific way to cancer, tumors, ms, lupus, etc. etc.
just cause you read it in an e-mail doesn't mean its true, people.
Cherry - of course I'll marry you - but not until I finalize my messy divorce with Raquel Welch. (The golddigger!)
You'll be reading about it in the tabloids.
David, so, if you read it on Snopes its true? I don't believe anything i see, read or hear, especially on the interweb. (except if Alan says it.)
Doesn't stevia cause diarrhea?
So, I'm not really a beneficiary of someone from a foreign country that i've never met, who wants to deposit millions of dollars into my account, if i just supply them with all my vital information?
Holly the Homemaker - How about some moderation in your use of commas?
"MODERATION, people!
I'm not a Doctor, and I'm not pretending to be, but, I do read alot, which broadens my information, as well, as my vocabulary, too!!"
apparently it doesn't do much for your sentence structure.
isn't there a web site for comma overuse?
Hi David, please consider that it may seem ignorant to others that you believe Snopes is the leading authority on...anything. Next time I'm in doubt, I'll be sure to consult Mythbusters before making a decision.
That which doesn't kill you will make you str...on..? *faints from Aspertame induced tumor*
My main concern is not just aspartame alone, but the use of combined artificial sweeteners over a long period of time. Many people consume a lot of different artificial sweetenrs, sugar free gum, sports drinks, diet soda, chocolate, cookies, syrups and on and on and over a lifetime, it seems unlikely it would have no effect.
I didn't get any of my opinions from an email and although snopes is a nice place to check things, it's not the only place I'd look for info and although FDA approved is nice to hear, it isn't 100% trustworthy IMO.
Stevia does not cause diahrrea - it's a natural sweetener like honey, just low cal.
FRED MEYER is just a grocery store where Stevia is available - sorry for confusion.
Fake sugar tastes icky.
I don't think I would want to try Turbo's ass-tea, whether it's plain or .. flavored.
great comments today. thank you for the laughs.
Turbo, you're a weirdo. an AWESOME one.
Ok...I'll go ahead and ask...
Is that a tumour in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?
There are people I know that would require a tumour in my brain for me to be pleased to see them...
I don't eat the stuff mostly because it tastes like crap.
I never use the stuff because it tastes like crap and I got a tumor anyway, so pbbbbbbtttt!! (*raspberry noise)
I, too, have heard of the studies on rats given artificial sweetener and was told that a human would have to eat the equivalent of 4 or 5 boxcarloads of artificial sweetener to come anywhere near the level given to the poor little rats.
Take that with a grain of salt or not, but I choose to believe it.
oops, addition to previous comment...
4 or 5 boxcarloads A DAY of artificial sweetener blah blah blah
@HOLLY THE GEOLOGIST- So sorry you don't approve of my sentence structure or overuse of commas...
But, do you think I care?
Thanks, librarian in the woodwork, for the reference.
Alas, keeka in a banana, I didn't read the research, but I did ask those two doctors I'd mentioned about it-- neither of whom could treat me if I did develop a tumor from aspartame. One, a friend, is a physical therapist, and the other, a psychologist who researched aspartame studies for a neuroscience class, is my sister. I'm sure they both have my (and their patients') best interests at heart when they say aspartame is ok. As does, come to think of it, the FDA...
I had a wrong number not that long ago where an old lady said, without preamble "I was watching the TV today and they said that diet soda will give you cancer."
Cat fights cause tumors!!! Easy girls. Meeeoooowwww!
Cancer causes mice.
Fact.
That's from my work. Please bring it back when you are done with it :)
