Aspartame
FOUND by Renee Gibbins in Saskatoon, SK, Canada
I found this on a bulletin board at the drug store. I "borrowed" the note for your website, but plan to return it the next time I am there.

Aspartame also causes migraines in those who are prone to them. To me, it tastes bitter, not sweet at all.

Red Bull also gives you heart failure if consumed to excess, Effie. Your call.

hmm, baby basil, now you've really spiced up the debate, I was leaning towards aspartime, but now I'm not so sure, heart failure sounds interesting.

Aspartame might give you a tumor.
It's not just an urban rumor.
But if you like it sweet,
it just can't be beat;
so go ahead, pile it on. Do more.

Aspartame also is known to cause depression in those prone to it.

When aspartame first came out as an alternative to saccharine I jokingly said that after everyone became addicted to it the nebulous scientific They would find out aspartame causes AIDS. OK, so it wasn't AIDS, but it's not good for you.

Sucralose (Splenda) is my sweetner of choice. Yum, yum, can't beat sugar and chlorine.

The amount of aspartame they were giving the rats in that study were gigantic, enormous amounts in a relatively short time span. So although the aspartame did give hte rats tumors, a human, in his/her lifetime, couldn't consume the amount of aspartame necessary to cause a tumor.

So, even though someone might drink 12 cans of diet soda pop and/or 15 cups of coffee loaded with aspartame each day for the rest of his/her life, he or she wouldn't get a tumor from it.

I've asked two different doctors about this, and they both told me the same thing.

Cherry OPepsi in the kind full of sugar, caramel coloring, that sort of $#!+.
This has been a public service announcement brought to you by C&H Pure Cane Sugar (That's the One.)

Actually, I knew three different young (20-something at the time) females who ALL consumed copious amounts of nutrasweet-laden products and were on The Pill.

No two of them lived in the same area of the US. Between 1990-1992, they all developed (opearable, benign) tumors in their brains. The only obviously apparent similarities were young, nutrasweet "addicted" and on The Pill.

Scary shit.

But truthfully, not as scary as the new one: chlorinated sugar. "It tasets like sugar cuz it's MADE from sugar.." Ummm yeah. Okay.

**MODERATION** is the key/answer
to any/everything!!
However, I've spoke to several Doctors' and Nutritionists. Also, done some online research myself, only because I use to use Sweet 'n Low in my tea & coffee.
When I was on a luncheon date with my Mother, she said something along the lines of, " Holly, don't you know, or haven't you heard that ALL of the sugar subtitutes cause cancer of some kind..?"
I was like, frightened, overwhelmed, in awe, in a bad mood (like mom, why didn't you tell me this before?)felt like punching a wall, and then, I just decided to have a smoke! (Everything can and will 'cause Cancer, even if you're trying your best being **moderate** about it)

No, really, not to be funny, but, the research that they've done on 'Sucrelose' and ''Aspartame', so far, over a long period of time, can and will cause cancer, tumors, lumps, etc...
It's an accumalative process, just like Vitamins, smoking, drugs, over/under-eating, etc...

MODERATION, people!
I'm not a Doctor, and I'm not pretending to be, but, I do read alot, which broadens my information, as well, as my vocabulary, too!!

Splenda is not a good alternative either, and there are virtually no studies on how all these different artificial sweeteners interact with each other long term. Sugar is better or if you must have a low calorie sweetener, use STEVIA, it's plant based and all natural, available in natural foods stores and FRED MEYERS in powdered or liquid concentrated form. Aspartame and Splenda are banned in many other countries. It drives me crazy how Splenda is marketed to parents to give their kids instead of sugar.

My sister in law is diabetic, she says Splenda makes her face numb, my daughter also says the same. Nutrasweet gives me a headache. I'll just stick to sugar. I try to mostly eat things my body recognizes.

As for what doctors tell you...have you ever seen that show "Mystery Diagnosis"? Scary stuff, and it seems the majority of those people on that show end up doing their own research and diagnosing themselves before doctors even do anything. No worries though, I bet Nutrasweet is a-ok, I mean the FDA wouldn't let them sell it if it were bad for you...would they?
+ June 26, 2008 10:49 AM +
Molly
Oh, and if seems "unsolicited advice" it's only because a lot of people are unaware there is another alternative for low calorie sweetener that isn't artificial and bad for you. You can even buy pop now sweetened with Stevia.

@ keeka in banana ... Here's a source for that research ["Over 20 years have elapsed since aspartame was approved by regulatory agencies as a sweetener and flavor enhancer. The safety of aspartame and its metabolic constituents was established through extensive toxicology studies in laboratory animals, using much greater doses than people could possibly consume."]

Butchko, Harriett H. et al., "Aspartame: review of safety." in "Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology" 2002 Apr;35(2 Pt 2):S1-93. also available online at:

Thank you, Librarian. I was beginning to think that I was the only one who doesn't see the need to constantly ingest sticky-sweet junk.

My main concern is not just aspartame alone, but the use of combined artificial sweeteners over a long period of time. Many people consume a lot of different artificial sweetenrs, sugar free gum, sports drinks, diet soda, chocolate, cookies, syrups and on and on and over a lifetime, it seems unlikely it would have no effect.

I didn't get any of my opinions from an email and although snopes is a nice place to check things, it's not the only place I'd look for info and although FDA approved is nice to hear, it isn't 100% trustworthy IMO.

Stevia does not cause diahrrea - it's a natural sweetener like honey, just low cal.

FRED MEYER is just a grocery store where Stevia is available - sorry for confusion.
