Ice Cream Machine
FOUND by Ryan Cordell in Taejon, South Korea
I found this while walking to the store one day. Not really sure why one would take a photo of these machines and then leave it in the middle of the street.

Is that a huge bag of cayenne pepper powder to sprinkle on your ice cream?

Interesting banner in the background. Must check out the website: www.greenfd.

Are those Hebrew letters? If not, what is the symbol under the "77"?
+ October 18, 2008 01:30 AM +
basil again in same place
Ah! Not Hebrew, but Korean. I can't read it of course but that is what I got. Greenfd.com is a Korean food website, probably a manufacturer. Looking again at the photo, the lady in the smock is definitely Korean/Asian, and above the sliding windows there are vertical strips of some Asian characters, could be Chinese but I can't see clearly. Neither of which I can read, I'm more into Romance languages.

It's the bucket. It's all about the yellow bucket. Yellow. Plastic. Very buckety. It's hard to clearly see anything else except the yellow plasic bucket. This FIND is the coolest ever. I wonder how you say "bucket" in Korean.

"77"???? Nope sorry! It is the Korean letters for the hard "K" sound and underneath is the Korean letter for the "O" sound such as in "bone" So what one poster thinks is the number "77" is simply the word "ko". It looks to be a typical Pochang macha aka. food tent/stall. They are portable as you see from the plastic sheeting tied to the poll on the right side just in front of the woman. Typical looking Korean lady who'd run this sort of place.

I am WAY, WAY more interested in finding out what Ryan is doing in South Korea! So what's going on in your life, Ryan, that took you to South Korea?
I went to SE Asia in the mid-80's and was never so glad to get back home in my life.

There's a large pet food dish on the floor and it's empty, maybe evidence of horse-sized pit bulls in the ice cream shop?

But like the finder, I'm haunted by the real question behind this image:Why would somebody leave it in the middle of the street? WHY? And of course it torments me as a reminder of all the things I have left in the middle of the street -- hundred-dollar bills, children, crystal stemware . . .

Thanks piggykr.. I was wondering about the plastic sheeting on the pole. I was thinking it was a maybe a garbage sack, but that would be inconvenient to have to untie it every time you wanted to put something in it. Even now that I know it's plastic sheeting I can't figure out how it works. Is the booth in a stage of being set up or dismantled?

I have seen a woman working a portable snack stand in Portland, Oregon, who looks exactly like the woman in this picture. The smock and everything. She dressed and looked and talked just like the funny Asian lady character on SNL (Bunny?). Real serious, no sense of humor. It was not an Asian food stand, but she sold crêpes. I think it was supposed to be like the crêpe stands in France, but not that good really. She scowled the whole time she was making them for us. I wanted to take a picture but she got mad at me. All in all it wasn't a pleasant experience.

All my pretty ones? Oh, hell-kite! All? And does Davy Rothbart have all my lost pens, bits of string and broken crayons?

Grumpy in the morning
Clover, just a guess on my part, but I'd say the plastic sheeting is strung across the wire that you can see at the top of the photo. So when you close down shop you drag the plastic across the front, tie it down, take off your apron and call it a night.

Thanks, piggykr, for the info!

Chrome Toaster in the corner of the Cosmic Kitchen
I like the little pointy ice cream cones, just sitting there, awaiting fulfillment. (the health department civil servant in me cringes just a bit.)

Are those big tubs of gummy bears atop the machine on the left? (that one looks more like Granitas than ice cream to me.)

you guys must be better able to see that woman than i am, esp. you, Clover, with her reminding you of a grumpy crepe stand woman.

Jonathan too in my office (sshhh!) -- on a Saturday!
The plastic bowl in the floor would be drinking water for the giant pit bull dogs the size of horses.

Night in gale
All this talk about the Find in the middle of the street got my perspective mixed up and made me think this was a view of the ice cream stand from the street. But this is the inside and she would serve cones through the sliding window. Don't you think?

LASH licking my double scooper...

Yup...definitely South Korea...I was in Seoul last summer...for 6 months....never so glad to be home in my life!

Was a great experience, though. TheMarkets had these sorts of stands all over the streets. This place probably just bought these new ice cream and Slushie makers.
So, they took a picture of them.

i concur, Wish. Get out of the office, Jonathan. (although, by now, he's probably in bed). I have a bottle of wine waiting for me at home. God its been a long day.

And i still don't see the woman in the ice cream shop.

42... good reminder.

how can you not see the woman? Of course maybe you're looking in the WRONG spot.. she's not "in the icecream shop"- she's at the right of the Polaroid, in a long sleeved fucshia shirt and red apron.. and it really looks like her nipps are showing right through that shirt.

Come on back after you kick that bottle, Mona, you'll see her.

That woman must be afraid of the miniature horse-sized pit bulls.

(not really a relevant comment, but whatever)

I see the woman. If those are her nipps, then she must not be really proportioned..since she looks like she is sagging almost to her knees!

piggykr in Incheon Korea
Hey Clover in the dawn,

Those little Korean ladies at food stalls and tents can be a riot or a pain in the butt.

The yellow pit-bull dish is NOT a dish for animals. Usually they are used to wash the dishes, food, carry water, or splash water all over the place for cleaning.

As for the size and shape of this lady's chest, again, it is a typical Korean woman who'd run this sort of place selling ice cream and slushies. You see them all over Korea everyday. There are more than a few in my family even. :p

u were wondering why someone would take a pic of that and leave it in the middle of the street...well maybe they were hoping it would be found
