This made me so sad. I feel I could have written this note- it is so hard to watch people you care about fall away like that. I understand how the author is saying "please" but doesn't know what he means. Please let things be back to how they were.

The writer is stressed. S/he wants to sound stern and concerned enough to get Daina to straighten out (hence the formal tone- "electronic mail"), but can't help but show in the end that s/he is at a loss for what to do. Sad.

What I read into the note is that Daina and the author broke up recently, and last night she hooked up with another guy at some party where they both were.

A very strange note!

The phrase "makes me rage" bothers me. To phrase it that way makes me suspicious of the writer's self-control, even though the letter is pretty calm otherwise. It raises a red flag for some reason.

And what a bizarre ending!!!

been there in done that
I think Daina knows the writer well enough to know what he means at the end. (reminds me of the way my ex used to write.)

Daina wants to party and get her freak on with whomever she chooses, but she wants this guy to be sitting there, missing her, waiting for her to get it all out of her system, and come on back, ready to settle down. He's not interested in being the doormat anymore. But he does still care. Doesn't want to see her hurt (or contracting anything).

She wants to be wanted, needs to be needed, and is engaging in all manner of attention seeking behaviors. (and coming by on Sunday, just to make sure he noticed.)

Wasn't college GREAT??

I got your electronic mail and received the facsimile machine-transmitted copy as well.

My 2 cents in Toronto, Canada
At the risk of stating the obvious, Daina and the writer sounds like a small town couple dealing with separation anxieties, growing up... and growing apart

Daina is now in the big city of Montreal, at McGill froshing it up, while the writer (whom I will call Guy)is left behind working with his bad tempered Dad, and brothers at the Mill. He spends most of his evening now sucking back Laurentides by the train tracks with his chums who is constantly asking him, "Have you heard from D lately?"

"I dont want to rage, but that bitch haven't called since the first week she got there... instead asking me to go to some smoke shop to get some electronic mail" "F... THAT!"

The "electronic mail" and "makes me rage" make me think English is not the writer's first language, or that the writer is from a former British colony-such as India...

I have a friend that i feel this way about, and i remember one of my friends' advice was to write her a letter. It would've looked much like this one.

Ponder in g the past
I think the writer is an Aspie, therefore the unusual use of English. And also the strong discomfort with feeling such powerful emotions. I like the name Daina; I have never seen this name spelled that way. It's pretty. But I wish the old Daina would come back, for his sake.

Very sad. I wonder if there is another page to this letter.

to Ponder in g the Past....

I think the English is wierd because the writer is French, or a French speaker. The phrase "makes me rage" is a literal (and bad) translation of the the French "Ca m'enrage," otherwise "it makes me angry."

Not to mention "electronic mail" could be "courriel electronique," email in French.

I think the writer might be her mother or father, seems like something a mother would say to her older daughter.

I admit that previous posters may have a point about the writer's first language being French, but when I first read the note, I thought of an older man, not really comfortable with technology (electronic mail) watching a much-younger sweetheart start to "go wild". He doesn't want to see her go that way, but he also knows that she won't listen to him and that he has no right to keep her.

Twilight in the sky
I'm pretty sure my best friend just went through something similar to this with his girlfriend. It sucks because his girlfriend thinks he is controlling since he cares about her. She says she loves him, but doesnt try to see anything the way he does. She just expects him to change.

so sad.

That looks almost exactly like my fathers handwriting. And he used to have a girlfriend before my mother with a name quite similar to that, I'm sure his ex's name was Dana, Daina is pretty similar to that...

creepy.
