Spay and Neuter
FOUND by Johanna Best in Orcutt, California
I got this as change at some store. Found it funny because there are a lot of illegal field workers around here.
V in not too far from Orcutt
I'd be happy to pay to spay/neuter *most* humans. A lot more than $5, too. The government should subsidize people who voluntarily get sterilized before spawning more than once.

i don't think we need to curb anyone ourselves- if you look at the quotes they include "in god we trust (to spay and neuter...)"
i'd say to trust in god for anything isn't the premium choice, but if you try and go to do what the 5$bill says yourself you might well end up being compared to fellows like mao or adlof h. from b.... and it wouldn't even be far-fetched. on the other hand it does seem quite a good idea at times to do so, and if it's just so that people who write such shite on their change may be inhibited to procreate and spawn more trash.

America - and the US in particular - has been a beacon of hope for millions of people over the centuries. The country has always depended upon immigrants, legal and illegal. Previous historical waves of immigration were huge but legal. The ratio of legal to illegal immigrants these days is simply a reflection on current government policy.

Who can blame someone living in poverty or in a repressive country for wanting to come to the US to build a better life for him/herself and their children? Who of us would not do exactly the same thing?

@Librarian, I can't answer for the Euro sign but in the past I've dealt with keyboards that came from Norway and the Netherlands. Though I can't recall specific differences between the two, I do recall that both were very different from American keyboards and I had to concentrate with trying to type on them. They weren't your usual QWERTY keyboards.

Sonny, Midwest-- Of course people want to move to America for a chance at a better life. But they should do so legally. That's all. It'd make things easier for employers, the government, and most importantly, the immigrants themselves. LEGAL immigration is win-win.

First time I've ever commented, but read them all the time. I just had to speak out here.

I have a neighbor with anti immigrant bumper stickers on her car (along with Giuliani for Prez), but it doesn't stop her from hiring them as farm hands. I guess she thinks the folks in town won't find out.

I can't see how Bush owning a 600 acre (? I’m guessing) ranch hasn't ever hired an illegal alien. They are essential down here in Texas, which is probably why W was so soft on them in his last proposal that pissed all the reps. off.

I like immigrants and think they should be given amnesty within reason proportionate to our economy.

Just trying to clear up Effie's post. I didnt know what she meant by chav, so here's what wikipedia said about it.

Chav (pronounced /ʧæv/) also Charv/Charver (pronounced /ʧɑːv/) are mainly derogatory slang terms in the United Kingdom for a stereotype fixated on low quality or counterfeit goods. It commonly refers to those belonging to a youth sub-culture, often stereotypically associated with a low socio-economic class, a striking dress sense and criminal activity.

I think a striking dress sense is reason to breed, I'd like to see more of that, but not criminal activity.

I have had some opportunity to study the change in requirements over time to immigrate legally into the US. It's a lot harder now (and has been since about WW2) than it was say 100 or 125 years ago. There are many, many more requirements now. In the days when Ellis Island was the main point of entry, about all you needed was a clean bill of health.
All Americans are immigrants unless they are Native Americans, so it's always best to remember where great-granpa came from!

Like Sonny says, who wouldnt want to come to the US ?(or, if they knew better, Canada.) You guys make it sound so good, being so powerful, and rich, and the home of opportunity and apple pie. I was watching that comedian.. lewis somebody, and he did a rant based on that very thing. He went on about how Americans should make it sound horrible to be here, and then you wouldnt have that illegal immigrant problem.

It would be nice if they could come to the US, or to Canada, in a legal way. Most of us north americans are descended from immigrants, too. Even the native canadians/americans probably came from somewhere else.

Freonz and co: Yes, there are Euro signs on the new keyboards, but some of them don't work unless you configure them to do so. A lot of us just use the capital E. We all know what it means in context. I just saw a documentary segment on the keyboard, and France and Germany have different boards to QUERTY, since q is much more common in French, and Z in German, than they are in English. Apparently you can configure a standard-issue QUERTY keyboard to act like a French/German/other keyboard via your PC's control panel.

Apparently also someone named Dvorak tried to launch a different keyboard and typing method to the one used to teach people on QUERTY, but it didn't fly. They had a method for different keyboard layouts, but it seems no one was impressed.

@Baby Basil, I'm a 100% American mutt. My folks were Europeans who came here before there even was an American and fought to create it. For that reason, in my mind, I don't consider my ancestors as immigrants. In a way, it's kinda sad since there never were an "back in the Old Country" or "when great-grandfather Sven came over" type stories from the grandparents.

@Mona Lisa, it was probably Lewis Black. And, re immigrants, I think the big difference between immigrants of today and those in the past is that today's immigrants show no real interest in trying to assimilate into American culture. That, and they are sending the majority of the money they make back to whence they came. IMO more people would be accepting of the great influx of immigrants if they at least behaved as if they were planning on staying here.

@orinoco, yikes! I just googled the Dvorak keyboard - that's awful! No wonder it didn't fly. Having 30+ years experience with a QWERTY it would be awful to have to change to something else.

Sigh. First of all - migrants come into the U.S. without papers because businesses continue to hire them. The businesses hire them to maximize their profits by not having to pay a living wage or benefits to a North American citizen who would demand it. Also, our trade policies affect their economies in a way that is making it difficult for many to survive. Second, even undocumented workers have taxes taken out of their paychecks, so they are "contributing" to our economy - besides the fact that they spend money while they are here. Finally, whether or not someone has documents does not allow others with the good fortune to have been born in a wealthier country to treat them like dogs. "Spay?" "Neuter?" - those are words to describe what we do to dogs. Are human beings dogs?

I think that the defacer of the fin is more deserving of being spayed or neutered than the illegal immigrants. I say this because I believe that people with myopic viewpoints raise children with similar values who(currently) get elected president and impose these shitty values on us. Whereas people willing to take a risk to better the lives of themselves and their families raise children who know the value of hard work and sacrifice.

Amen Puckhog amen. That last comment - I rarely read such truth on the internet.

My best friend works as an immigration paralegal. Most (and when I say most, I mean all) legal immigrants who come here to work do so not to perform manual tasks, but to push paper. The US makes it very, very difficult to immigrate legally, ESPECIALLY if you are poor or under-educated. So the US is, in effect, discriminating against people who want to better themselves by immigrating here in favor of those who already have it pretty good where they were born.

Let's face it - unless we are of Native descent, we're all descendents of immigrants. Half of my ancestors fought in the American Revolution, half entered through Ellis Island. Regardless, both groups came from somewhere else to this continent. They wanted a better life. I'm sure this is overly idealistic, but I look forward to a time when people are recognized as people instead of "them".

First thing that came to mind is a few simple changes and Yes This would be an excellent find. Change the idea of immagrants with a more broad term like stupid or inconsiderate rude asshole etc.... Bad people make bad parents simple as that. Bad people can be born anywhere and be any colour as well.

Some people in this world are below animals.

This also brings two things to mind why can any two morons have a child by sex. With no investigation done to see if they should even be allowed to raise a child. While a couple trying to adopt has to face endless battles proving how loving and great they will be.

It is the same with pet ownership any bozo can walk in to a pet store buy any pet and walk out. I think owners should have to be licensed to have pets take tests know how to properly care for thier pet and be held more accountable for how thier pet acts.

Sorry about the pet rant kinda off topic a bit but they want to ban antire breeds of dogs where i live due to attacks in the news. It's not the breed's fault bad owners are to blame... yet they arn't being banned from existence here.

As a last little ranty note. I must admit a tiny part of me feels for this bill. My city is so full of legal and non legal immagrants it can be frustrating. I have nothing against those who seek a better life in Canada nothing at all. However I do believe if you admire a country enough to go to it you should adapt and absorb some of the culture. No I do not want a melting pot. I want them to keep thier language and beliefs thier clothing and lifestyle food and holidays...however I expect in return that they learn one of our national languages. That they be proud to be Canadian and absorb some of our culture as well as thiers. The Country should not adapt for each new arrival the arrival should adapt to the country otherwise why arrive here. Why come to a place if you don't love the land for what it is.

@freonz and orinoco ... basic library reference question/answer regarding Dvorak keyboard: The deal with it is that it puts the keys one uses most often in locations where one's stronger fingers can get to more easily. Our "standard" QWERTY keyboards were laid out as they are because early speed typists on manual typewriters could type faster than the mechanism worked. So the designers slowed them down by spreading out the letters and letter combinations. Nowadays, IF people would learn to type using a Dvorak keyboard, they'd be able to type faster than Mavis Beacon.

It's sort of a VHS vs. Beta thing where the better techmology loses out.

The find is pretty horrible. I do want to add two cents to the immigration debate, though.
I live in southeastern Arizona, just north of the Mexican border. Our community is plagued by illegal immigrants and drug runners coming through here. Littering, petty crime, taking water from wells (and sometimes not turning it off, which can be a disaster) and general fear of guys running through here with 50-pound backpacks full of drugs are problems. I don't blame people for trying to get here for better opportunities, but the system is incredibly broken. We here along the rural border pay the price. The illegals walking for three days, often after being misled about the distance, pay the price. The employers who get to pay wages legal immigrants wouldn't accept make the profit. Something needs to be done. Amnesty is NOT the answer; it'll just continue the wave. But a total restructuring of the immigration system is definitely necessary.

Daphne - I am also in AZ, thankfully a little farther inland, and I totally agree. The illegal immigration situation is a serious problem here. I don't have specific numbers, but the amount of violent crimes by illegals is highly dispraportionate to those by legal residents. There is a process to getting in legally, one that involves background checks (not that I trust the Mexican govt to be keeping solid criminal records). The legal route needs to be overhauled, but not disregarded. Till then, I'll continue to support Sheriff Joe.

false. If they do not have a SSN, how can they be taxed? Now, if they have fake papers, I guess that is one thing, but most of the illegals in our area are daily laborers who get paid cash by the day, and send most of it back to Mexico.

My biggest issue with illegal immigration is they fact we have to educate and medically treat without them having to pay property tax to support the school districts, or make good on their medical bills. The cost is passed on to tax payers and and medcial costs of those who do pay.

It comes with the territory though. I would not want any immigrant, legal or illegal to be persecuted, I just wish they had more motivation to become legal.

Undocumented farmworkers and construction workers who work for companies - even if working for a "subcontractor" get paychecks. They have SS numbers - they may be "fake" documents, but they are getting taxes taken out of their paychecks. In fact, if they get SS taken out, they are paying for a benefit they will never receive. Day labor may be another matter, in our area, many day laborers are plain old down on their luck Americans. They also purchase goods and services (food, rent, utilities) locally, often at a premium, and pay sales taxes. Even when they send money back home they are paying someone locally for that service. Most undocumented immigrants are adult males who come to work and so we're not paying for their education. Children born in the United States, even to undocumented parents are U.S. citizens. Even when we do pay for an undocumented immigrant's education or medical cost, it is no different from paying for any low-income, non-homeowner, uninsured person's education or medical cost - and there are far more citizens currently in that category than undocumented.

There are so many myths and sterotypes about undocumented immigrants that feed in racism and hate. The real question though is why do we rain down penalties on the individual immigrants when the real culprits are greedy, profit driven companies?

Actually, Cutthroat Joe, Illegal immigrants DO pay federal and SS taxes and can not collect SS payments that they pay into.

http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/internatio

And as to Property taxes, a lot of people don't pay these taxes (since they only apply if you own a home) and still get medical care and send their kids to school.

I also pay taxes for other people's kids, legal and illegal) to go to school even though I don't have kids and I don't complain, since we don't pay taxes for a specific purpose, but into a general fund for the betterment of the society as a whole.

Immigration in this country became heavily restricted in the 1930's and part of this was to kept out Jews who were trying to escape Germany. In fact when Hitler came to power he just wanted the Jewish people to leave Germany but unfortantely few countries would accept the large influx of immigrants to their own lands and eventually Hitler had to resort to other means. I had a teacher whose family left Germany in 1939, just before the German borders were closed and the only reason her family was allowed to enter the USA was by taking a test to prove they were farmers.

Also it's true that first generation immigrants tend to not assimilate completely, usually it's not until they have children who grow up here that a community begins to fully assimilate. Immigrants tend to form communities amoung themselves and stick together, why do you think there are places like little Italy or Chinatown? Or in my case, since I live in South Florida, Little Havana and Little Hati? But eventually these places become intergrated into the city and after enough time the even become tourist attractions that offer many delicious goods!

I find it very distasteful to suggest that a person's immigration status should reflect whether or not they are allowed to have children.

Our system is broken, taking honest law-abiding people (from every Country, not just Mexico) over a decade to earn their status. That includes people who have married a citizen and had numerous children in this country. I first hand know two people - one from England and one from Australia that have been married over 8 years each and are still going to meetings and filling out paperwork.

To decide that they aren't worth having children is just ignorant and wrong. America is a melting pot and almost everybody here is a descendant of an immigrant. Had the laws been what they are now 100 years ago, many of our grand and great grandparents would have been illegal immigrants, but it was a lot easier back then.

@Freonz - I do agree that it is disheartening to see so many stick strongly to their roots and send money home, but it isn't our choice how they adapt to America. Thinking back to Ellis Island and the flood of immigrants then, they did much the same thing. Dividing off into Little Italys and Germantowns, they kept a strong community of home and spoke their native languages. They also sent money back home until their relatives were able to live comfortably there or immigrate here and join them in the new life. I think it was only in the 2nd generation a pride of being American and speaking fluent English stuck. Many studies show that by the 2nd generation their customs and language are greatly damaged, existing only to aid their parents and by the 3rd generation it is entirely lost. This is just the newest rush, not something we've seen, but not the first time our country has seen it.

@Night in gale, birthright citizenship is bestoed on any child born in the United States of America. Naturalization implies that they were at one time an alien, which isn't the case.

Once a child is born here, I believe it's harder to remove parent(s) that are in the country illegally since they are the guardian(s) of an American citizen.

I'd actually be in favor of abolishing birthright citizenship IF the parents are not in the country legally.

Unless you live in an area where you see the effect it has on your city...whether it be overcrowding, major traffic, over run emergency rooms, and overcrowded schools you really shouldn't be commenting. I'm sorry I know that sounds harsh, but I was born and raised in this area and to think it's changed so much and my kids aren't going to have the quality life here that I did really sucks. I don't know what the answer is to the cheap labor issue, but something has got to give. We just simply can't keep absorbing all these people that continue to cross the border illegally. It makes me angry too that just because you speak out against illegal immigration that automatically makes you rascist. That is not always the case, nor is it the case with me.

wrye in analogy land
i dislike the sentiment expressed very much, and while you all have said it, i will say again- yes, we are all strangers to this land unless we are native americans. and knowing many of the illegal people here- they *are* of native descent (mestizo- mixed indians) or natives from central/south america. so georacially speaking, they have land based 'migration rights' like any other native population. (think of an analogy of birds- native migratory species vs. invasive species)

my people came to this country- some legal, some not- and we travel. it's what we do and have always done, belonging to ourselves not boundaries of lands or nations. it's not better or worse, only different. i respect the right of others to do the same, and i am no one to tell another what reproductive choices they should make.

excellent discussion. vivant!

@kitten in in so cal, the overcrowded state, who said, "Unless you live in an area where you see the effect it has on your city...whether it be overcrowding, major traffic, over run emergency rooms, and overcrowded schools you really shouldn't be commenting."

I know this sounds harsh but, BLOW IT OUT YOUR ASS! You may not think you're a racist, but your comment is judgenmental and self-centered. Do you honestly think that people who aren't "affected" by this issue (and who isn't?) don't have valid opinions? Shit, even Pepper has a right to comment here. I'm sad about your kids' quality of life, too, but not because of illegal immigration.

Kitten, who says you're a racist if you speak out against illegal immigration? I guess I can comment since I live in San Diego. The problem with speaking out against illegal immigration is that the people speaking out tend to blame the immigrants, instead of the government that doesn't strive to make its country better for the sake of its people.

It's kind of hard to see one side and exclude the other... I mean, we're talking about *people* here! (I was told a long time ago that "it's easier to have a war against a 'them'".)

Now, another way to look at this - is from outer space (sort of).. Pull back, and pretend that you are reading a book/seeing a movie about, say, a poor villager in a Latin American country:
--This village-guy has struggled to find work and income to provide food, clothing and education for his family, but there is not enough available.
--Perhaps his mother, his wife or his kids are sick. Someone in the family desparately needs modern medical attention.
--He knows people who have gone to (an adjacent, more prosperous country), crossed the border and worked and sent $$ to their families. One month's work in (other country) can sustain his family for (a year?). Can pay modern doctors and hospitals for medical care.
--He knows that going to (another more prosperous country) is illegal, unless he has a lot of money and resources, and can wait a long time *before* he goes. He knows that he can be robbed on the way there, on the way back... He can be jailed, die on the trip...

If you were reading this book, and weren't personally "involved" in the countries -- would you think the village-guy was brave to sacrifice his/her personal safety to support his/her family?

It's a tough call when you think about it as your *own* decision, if your own family needed help. Or if you are 17, 18, 19, and your family can't continue to feed you and there aren't any jobs...

p.s. -- I once was told that "according to the terms of the Guadalupe Jidalgo treaty, which deeded/granted California from Mexico to U.S., America would have *two* formal languages, Spanish & English."

It made a lot of sense to me... unfortunately, a couple of years ago I got the bright idea to check this on the internet. I think I found the whole (translated) text of it, and couldn't find that clause.

Anybody Bored in the library? Want to double-check me??

making blanket statements based solely upon my own observations in the world
Recently I was ...somewhere in the continental United States... and everywhere I went- to a restaurant, to a grocery store, to a hotel, past a construction site, to a funky retro clothing store, to a trashy girly girl clothing store.. out of probably 75 employees I saw in all... maybe five of them were Caucasian. The work force was primarily Hispanic, with a dash of Middle Eastern thrown in.

Now, I make no assumptions one way or the other about the validity of their status: immigrant, born in the USA, here legally, here under the radar. Don't know, don't care.

I thought to myself, "where the heck are all the Whiteys?" And then I realized that I was in one of the areas hit very hard by first the crack epidemic, and now meth (although I'm told that's on the downswing. but drive on over by the airport and you'll see many signs that it's still alive and well). So apparently, many of those Caucasians (who aren't wearing suits and ties in Corporate America)- those people who used to make up the bulk of the work force-- are fecked up on drugs. These people can sit around bitching all they want about minorities moving in and "taking all our jobs" but the cold reality is if you're not ready, willing and able to DO that job, someone else is going to step in and do it instead. The employer is always going to go for the reliable, hardworking guy over the guy who doesn't show up for four days after he gets his paycheck, or the guy who shows up at 10 AM, and leaves at 2PM.

I don't necessarily have a problem with illegal immigration in the US...I mean, there is always an employer who is willing to "pay under the table" so illegal immigration is bound to be a problem if these people don't get prosecuted for encouraging it. I only have a few qualms about it...mainly, THEY DON'T PAY TAXES PERIOD. I mean, if your going to work in the states be decent enough to pay taxes here as well to take the burdon off of us middle-classers. The only other qualm is that they actually work... don't add to the already accumulating population steeped up in welfare fraud. Lastly, don't drive in the states if you never have in your ENTIRE LIFE!

Okay...two cents has been added...mmmm make that three.

Librarian, to answer your question completely, no, the euro sign (at least on keyboards in Spain) is not where the dollar sign is on keyboards in the states. Instead of being on the number 4 key (where the dollar sign is), the euro symbol is on the letter E key.

Can't deal with the illegal immigrant problem until we get our own citizens cleaned up. I know a woman on welfare, doesn't work a day (heck, she gets paid more goverment money to stay home than she would by working), and just keeps popping out kids (she's up to 8 now). We need to get policy in place (that is enforced) for the people who are already citizens. I mean, I'm definitely not like we should be like China is with having kids or anything, but if you have to live on welfare and you keep popping out kids - there's a problem.

Wow! Look at all the conversation the $5 bill stirred up! I think it's a great find (even though I don't agree with what's written on it) - if more people TALKED about issues and their beliefs, we'd be a better world (or at least I'd like to think so!).

Illegal is illegal. That said, I can think of MANY situations where I would try to find a way around the immigration law IF I were living somewhere that SUCKED and had no money. So. Good luck to you if you are trying to find a better life. If you are a criminal, than I don't care where you came from... you play the game and you will pay the price. If you didn't have a choice truly, well then good luck to you. As far as spaying and neutering... with world population popping at the seems, this will become a real issue by the end of the century, barring mass genocide and other tragedy. The good old days are quickly passing us by peoples. Our children's children will look back at us and wonder why we were so incredibly dense that we sucked the world dry. (resource wise) Just a thought.

the american government has "spayed and neutered" in the past--many native american and puerto rican women have been involuntarily sterilized.

Yeah, this one was pretty racist. Just for the record lets all remember that when white people immigrated to this country they did not follow the laws of the land already set here. I think we all know how they treated the residents of this country... Now its white people who get mad about "illegal immigrants." Sigh.
