We collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone
else's life. Anything goes...

Wendy and Debbie were best friends, just for that one day.
I remember it well...
Awww, what cute sisters!
Or, brother and sister...
Well, possibly, brothers.
But whatever, how cute!!
horizontal stripes were all the rage back in ninteen dickety two. very cute, i'd love to have hair that nice
These photo booths were my favorite part about Kmart.
I'm suddenly very depressed over the fact that ours took their machine out ages ago. "Super" Kmart my butt!
Wow! Are we having fun, or what!!
Hey! It's Thelma and Louise.
oop oop oobie doo, boop oop oobie doo, boop oop oobie doo, boop oop oobie doo, boop oop oobie doo, boop oop oobie doo, boop oop oobie doo, boo
The Carpenters road manager insisted that Karen should be a brunette.
I really don't think they are girls, they both look definitely male to me. If they are girls i'd hate to see parents.
The Partridge Family step sisters...
Level with us Greg... You took this photo so you could put it in your wallet and tell people the blonde was your girlfriend- didn't you? You can be honest- we're all friends here.
LaCrosse!! A Find from LaCrosse!!!!
I did part of my undergrad studies there...found the 90 plus bars and a brewery a bit distracting to my academics. Left and found a slightly more suitable environment.
But it wasn't in the early 70s and neither of those two are me. Regardless it's a fun pic...
It looks like the blonde has a firm grip on the other girl's arm. Hostage situation? peer-to-peer kidnapping?
One on the left is a little Frances McDormand looking.
American Apparel the early years!
I'm with Geek...that hand looks a bit "death-grip" like, on the dark kid's arm...and the smile on the dark kid's face is a bit uncertain, while Blondie's is a bit forced. "We ARE SO best friends! We ARE! We ARE! See, I got pitchers!"
haha that one Does have a grip on the others arm, I bet the brown headed girl keeps acting out, and the blonde, heather, the more determined one (ha!) is like "straighten up Debbie, Or you won't be in the next set of pictures!"
I think I forgot to wash behind my ears!
An early portrait of Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi?
I like that the girls left their picture taped to the booth. Too bad everyone that followed didn't do the same. It makes for a fascinating collage.(or did they? Greg? were there other pictures, but this one was the one you chose?)
I love those picture sticker machines where you get your picture taken, get about 30 mini stickers, and leave one stuck to the booth.
After seeing Shaun Cassidy perform "Da Do Run Run" on the Hardy Boys, Kim and Gina celebrated the first day of 8th grade summer break by going to K-Mart and buying the album. Tammy, Kim's older sister dropped them off in their Mom's Vista Cruiser station wagon. Being allowed to shop alone made them feel like the mature future high-schoolers they had become
While they were there, they stocked up on Pop Rocks, and bought the latest copy of Tiger Beat magazine. Outside the store, waiting to be picked up (Tammy was delayed due to a heavy make-out session with her boyfriend, Jeff )they figured out they had just enough change to have their pictures made in the photo booth. Two of the shots were really goofy, but in one of the pictures, both of them actually looked pretty good. That's when Gina came up with the idea of taping it to the photo booth. Maybe some of the high school guys would see it, and recognize them at school next fall...
Unfortunately, Kim and Gina weren't speaking by 4th of July. When Kim took the album home, Tammy and her friends made fun of her, and ended up scratching the record so bad it skipped. They also wrote "Kim loves Shaun" surrounded by hearts and kissy lips, all over the cover. Gina was devastated, when she saw the cheesy mustache they had the audacity to add to Shaun's gorgeous face!
By the end of 9th grade, they were on speaking terms again, but it was never the same. Sadly, in high school, they began moving in different social circles. Gina the blonde was just cute enough to fit in with the preppy crowd, while Kim the brunette, became a stoner. They still sign each others yearbooks, or shared a seat on the bus occasionally, but the friendship was never the same.
After Kim dropped out to follow the Grateful Dead, Gina never saw her again. Although sometimes, when she hears "Da Do Run Run" she thinks of Kim fondly. She remembers the independence she felt and fun they had the day they bought the album together. She also wonders...whatever happened to that album?
was there a "preppy" crowd in the early seventies? Just wondering, cuz I wasn't there, but "preppy" to me seems such an eighties thing.
Strangely, one of these girls reminds me of my sister when we were younger, and both her name AND mine have been mentioned in these comments.
Da do ron ron ron, da doo ron ron.
Oh dear..that could be me and my best friend..
This photo was my find, and it was the only one taped to the booth. It's interesting that there's some "debate" about whether they're both girls; In all the years that I've had this photo, that possibility never occurred to me. (Yes, some males had long hair then, but it generally didn't look this well-kept ...)
When I was this age (as the girls in the photo), I had a "boy cut" and used to get odd looks when I would use public restrooms.
Kind of funny as I look back on it..
No, no, no. If you grew up in the 70s you'd know, these are most definitely boys. The hair, the clothes, they all looked like that. The blond looks exactly like the photos of my husband at that age - shiny, combed, surfer hair and all.
(definitely girls. although it's possible the dark haired one is a guy.)
Hey Greg, thanks for weighing in on your Find, and for sharing it in the first place!
The blonde looks like Jan Brady.
Wendy was innocently walking through Kmart when a creepy, freckly blonde grabbed her arm and dragged her into a photo booth. The blonde gripped Wendy's arm and beamed into the camera. Wendy pleaded "help me" with her eyes. After the photo, the blonde introduced herself as Debbie and taped the photo to the booth to prove to everyone that she did indeed have a friend.
I notice that Greg deftly sidestepped my question... Which only serves to confirm my theory.
I had a haircut very much like the girl's on the left - The "Tenille". That's what you'd ask for at the beauty salon. Slightly before the "Farrah Fawcett", "Dorothy Hamill" or "Bo Derek".
Maybe you found this picture at the KMart in LaCrosse, but those androgynous sprites were probably from up river in Trempealeau or the boathouses near Latch Island in Winona.
This is adorable! Back in the day when kids' teeth didn't have to be perfect. The brunette's crossed front teeth are so cute!
What? These are boys??

I didn't send that twice, honest.
@Help I'm slippin'.. no, the so-called popular clique in the 70's wasn't known as the preppy crowd. It was basically the same thing, but those kids were "soshie" (long "O") as in "social" and those who were shoshie were called "socs" but it was pronounced "soshes" (long "O").
So, whose hand is that at bottom center of the photo? And what is the hand grabbing hold of? Or trying to?
Is one of these two named Rosemarie?
There have been "preppies" as long as there have been expensive private "prep schools." The term just didn't become current for the "in crowd" until the late 70s. Only non-preppies call preppies preppies, if you see what I mean. To preppies, other preppies are just "our crowd." What Nancy Mitford dubbed "PLU" (People Like Us) in the UK of the late 50s, and which became known as Sloan Rangers in the 80s.
I know about the preppie dress code, but do they have words that are "U" or "Non-U" a la Sloan Rangers?
mmm bop
@been there
I grew up in the 70s (age 8 - 18), and I think they are girls.
I grew up in the 70's and ya guys had long hair ,some even brushed daily yet not one that I knew and I grew up in Toronto ever had it styled so good and if they did they would have been in the closet trannys, no, no question these are girls , give me a break two Nancy Drew type friends. I'd see them every day in high school. Today, they are the girls whom became Doctors or research scientist ect..
WOW. it's really weird to read about someone who lives in my town on here. it's a small world.
Holy crap! I too am from La Crosse. And LOL @ "Just me (yes, THAT one)", 3rd street will will definitely steer you away from your studies
I wishes it was 1973 again, those were awesome days. Now read the book: The One Hundred Dollar Misunderstanding and tell seaweedsandwich@yahoo.com what you think!
Sorry, mominterrupted, but I honestly didn't keep this photo in my wallet - or try to pass it off as a pic of my girlfriend(s). But I'm sure my teenage hormones had SOME role in my decision to snag it. Probably, if it had been a photo of people I actually knew, it wouldn't have interested me nearly as much. Because it seemed unlikely that I'd ever encounter these two in person, I could appreciate their direct eye contact and imagine that, miraculously, I was included in their circle of friends.
